As the Wise Moose Says, "This Time, For Sure!"
I hear, as by the voice of the wind itself, that copies of Cthulhu 101 are now present at Third Coast Comics (6234 N. Broadway, Chicago). Which means, yes, that's right, the Signing Is On. I'll be on hand to sign and chat and do comic-store things on Wednesday, November 18 from 6:00 p.m. until Whenever. And who knows? There might be copies of the elusive Complete Idiot's Guide to U.S. History, Graphic Illustrated. Or even Where the Deep Ones Are and The Antarctic Express, for all your young-and-squamous gift-buying needs. Can such things be? Only Dagon can say -- and you can ask his representatives in the world of delightfully illustrated irreverence on Wednesday. |

More Rihanna
Something I stuck over on an flocked comment thread and that didn't make it into my Jukebox blurb for "Wait Your Turn": POST ONE: Yeah, that's where I am with Rated R, haven't really broken it down to tracks; in my blurb I made a preliminary attempt to describe what's going on with the grain of her voice, how she uses it. (The football metaphors in "Wait" make me shrug in weariness, but the charred-ember hardness of her voice makes "the wait is ovah" chant overwhelming, as are the thick twists she gives words when she puts on her island accent.) POST TWO: OK, listening some more, I'm struck with how gently lilting the second half of the verse ["sometimes it takes a thousand tries" etc.]* could have been if her voice hadn't been burning holes in it. I like the solid mass of "Russian Roulette," but I'm glad the album has these half-non-massive moments too. *I don't want to call it the chorus, even though that's where it sits in the song structure, since the chant is what really acts as the refrain, even if the chant doesn't have a fixed spot in the song structure. The 2009 Poptimists Poll
Before Jeff has a heart attack, no, I'm not starting it now! Next month we'll be running our usual Poptimists tracks-of-the-year poll - with the Top 40 countdown livening up your first week back to work in January. The only thing is, it seems to me we've gone a bit off the boil in terms of talking about new stuff, because we've been having so much fun looking back over the decade! I'm considering doing a nomination-and-ballot process for this year's poll, so this is really only a marker entry to say "get thinking about this stuff". It's been a pretty grand year and there's no really obvious winner so it should be very close. |

Yet Another Year In Pop: 46
Black Eyed Peas beat Leona to #1 - news which has rocked the OCC to its very core i.e. they haven't updated their site yet this morning so we'll have to make do with slightly unreliable Yahoo Music instead (apols for duplications/omissions etc). Poll #1486190 Yet Another Year In Pop: 46
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 15 Which of this week's new entries are any good at all? Reminder! You have roughly 24 hours to vote in Heat #6 of 2003, where Missy, Lumidee, Benassi and Blur are all battling it out for the last two qualification spots. Don't forget to put your new favourite in the text box! |

Another Year In America November 12, 2009
"Russian Roulette" entered the chart two weeks ago at 100, rose last week to an unpromising 75, then this week on the heels of a publicity blitz that included Rihanna's 20/20 interview it jumps to 9. We'll see if it sticks; it doesn't match anything else on the chart, in subject matter or severity. My guess is it holds on for a bit, maybe falling a little then hanging around as people get used to it. ( Rihanna )( Justin Bieber )( Jay Sean )( Jesse McCartney )( Taylor Swift )( Luke Bryan )( Birdman ) Current Music: Rihanna "Russian Roulette" |
